Proteus(Neptune's moon)

Proteus is the largest of Neptune's inner moons and was discovered by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1989. It is named after the shape-changing sea god in Greek mythology. Proteus is a large, irregularly shaped moon that measures about 420 kilometers (260 miles) across its longest dimension, making it the second-largest moon of Neptune after Triton. It orbits Neptune at a distance of about 117,600 km (73,100 miles) and completes one orbit in about 1.12 Earth days (26.9 hours). Proteus is believed to be a rubble-pile moon, composed of rock and water ice. Its surface is heavily cratered, with a few large impact basins and several grooves and ridges that may be the result of tectonic activity. Proteus is notable for having a highly elongated shape, with its longest dimension being about 30% greater than its shortest dimension.
