Despina is the third innermost moon of Neptune and was discovered by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1989. It is named after a nymph in Greek mythology who was a daughter of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Despina is a small, irregularly shaped moon that measures about 150 kilometers (93 miles) across its longest dimension. It orbits Neptune at a distance of about 52,500 km (32,600 miles) and completes one orbit in about 9 hours and 18 minutes. Despina is believed to be a captured asteroid or Kuiper Belt object, and its surface is heavily cratered. The moon is also known to have some smooth plains and grooves, which may be indicative of tectonic activity in the past.
